Charlotte - Overnight detours will be in place on Interstate 85 next week as work progresses on the City of Charlotte's University Pointe Boulevard project, which will build a bridge over the interstate. The finished project will create additional connectivity over the interstate and provide alternatives to the heavily travelled W.T. Harris Boulevard and University City Boulevard.
The road closure and detours are necessary to set girders for the new bridge over I-85 from Ikea Boulevard to IBM Drive, near University City Boulevard. Bridge girders are support beams that help support the bridge deck.
Crews will close I-85 South at the bridge construction from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, and Tuesday, Aug. 2. Preliminary lane closures to prepare for the nighttime work will be installed both nights at 10 p.m.
While I-85 South is closed in this location, southbound motorists will be directed to exit onto eastbound W.T. Harris Boulevard, turn right onto U.S. 29 South, then turn right onto the I-85 Connecter and return to I-85 Southbound.
On Wednesday, Aug. 3, the project contractor will move equipment from the southbound side of I-85 to the northbound side. This work, however, will not require the closure of I-85.
Nightly closures will begin along I-85 North on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 11 p.m.to 5 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 5. Northbound I-85 will be also be closed on Saturday, Aug. 6, from midnight until 7 a.m.
The detour plan for I-85 North will direct northbound motorists to use Exit 42 (U.S. 29/N.C. 49), turn left onto U.S. 29 North, turn left onto westbound W.T. Harris Boulevard, then a right turn back to I-85 North.
Weather and other types of delays could add days to this closure. If inclement weather does extend the work, any subsequent closures would have similar time restrictions.
