Asheville - A weight-restriction limit has been placed on the Brevard Road bridge that spans I-240 on the west side of downtown Asheville.
Earlier this week, a vehicle above the clearance height struck two beams and damaged the underside of the bridge.
In order to ensure the safety of commuters and larger vehicles, the Department of Transportation placed a temporary weight-limit on the bridge Friday afternoon.
Until repairs can be made, the current weight limit for traffic on the bridge is 20 tons for a single vehicle and 24 tons for a tractor-trailer.
The NCDOT is in the process of obtaining bids from contractors to repair the damage. It is likely that a heat-straightening process will be used for the repair.
Once work begins, it is expected to take two to three weeks for the company to make the repairs and the restriction is lifted.
