Raleigh - Warmer overnight weather means construction crews for the I-40 Fortify project are able to work on asphalt overlay and repair work over at least the next two nights.
At 9 p.m. Wednesday, crews will close lanes on I-40 West between South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road so they can safely do the asphalt work. At 11 p.m., a closure goes into place for the South Saunders Street ramp to I-40 East to allow the same type of work to take place.
The ramp closure will send motorists in both directions on South Saunders Street onto detour routes. Traffic coming out of downtown Raleigh will go under I-40, turn left on Rush Street, then left on Hammond Road to get back to I-40 East. Traffic going north on South Saunders Street will continue on to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and turn right, then right again on Rock Quarry Road to return to I-40.
The roadway lanes and ramp will be re-open by 5 a.m. on Thursday.
The pavement improvement work will help smooth out roadway rough spots and fix potholes. The improvements also include new lane markings and the replacement of reflective roadway markers.
