Pedestrian Bridge Removal Prompts Closures in Davidson County

Winston-Salem - N.C. Department of Transportation contractors must close a portion of N.C. 8 and U.S. 29/70/Business 85 in Lexington as they remove an aging pedestrian bridge and construct a new interchange.

"The pedestrian bridge will be removed to allow for the construction of longer acceleration and deceleration lanes, which will make this interchange safer for motorists," said Division Nine Resident Engineer Dale Swicegood. During the work, U.S. 29/70/Business 85 at N.C. 8 will be closed in both directions nightly from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. starting Monday, Sep. 26, until work is complete on Friday, Sep. 30. Northbound traffic will use N.C. 8(Winston Road), Fifth Street and Main Street to detour around the work. Southbound traffic will use Main Street, Sixth Street and N.C. 8 (Winston Road) in the opposite direction.

Transportation officials remind motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
