Charlotte - North Sharon Amity Road between U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard) and Pierson Drive will close temporarily during the weekend of Friday, July 29, as crews continue to make progress on the Independence Boulevard widening project. Furthermore, North Sharon Amity Road from Pierson Drive to Albemarle Road will be open only to local traffic.
By 10:00 p.m. on Friday, message boards will alert drivers to the need to use Monroe Road, North Wendover Road, Independence Boulevard, and Albemarle Road to detour around the closure. North Sharon Amity should reopen to traffic Monday morning, August 1, at 5 a.m.
Highway projects like this one are currently underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory's 25-Year Transportation Vision to enhance travel safety and to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation opportunities.
Once completed, the project will widen Independence Boulevard from N.C. 24/27 (Albemarle Road) to east of Wallace Lane, creating an expressway with no traffic signals on Independence Boulevard between Harris Boulevard and Uptown Charlotte. The contract amount for the project is $51.7 million, and it is scheduled to open to traffic in summer 2017.
