Portion of Roanoke Church Road Closing for Monroe Expressway Construction

Charlotte - The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a portion of Roanoke Church Road in Union County for the construction of a new bridge over the Monroe Expressway.

This project is one example of the transportation improvement projects underway across the state as part of Governor McCrory's 25-Year Transportation Vision to enhance travel safety and to better connect North Carolinians to jobs, education, healthcare and recreation opportunities.

The road will close to through traffic on Monday, June 13, between Ridge Road and Secrest Shortcut Road. This construction is expected to take about 200 days, so the road is expected to reopen in late December.

Motorists can avoid the closure by using a signed detour that will take them from Ridge Road to Fowler Road and then to Secrest Shortcut Road. Access to residences will be maintained at all times during the closure.

Once completed, the Monroe Expressway will extend nearly 20 miles from U.S. 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to U.S. 74 between the towns of Wingate and Marshville in Union County. The project will improve mobility and capacity in the U.S 74 corridor by allowing for high-speed regional travel while maintaining access to properties along existing U.S. 74.
