Raleigh - The public gets a chance this week to learn more about a proposed N.C. Department of Transportation project to widen Aviation Parkway between Interstate 40 (Exit 285) and N.C. 54 (Chapel Hill Road).
The proposal would widen the Parkway to a four-lane, median divided road, including over Lake Crabtree, at a projected cost of $29 million. The upgraded road would feature extra wide outside lanes to accommodate bicycles, and existing sidewalks would be replaced. There is also the possibility of additional sidewalks being added where they currently don't exist, as well as a multi-use trail, through a partnership between NCDOT and the towns of Morrisville and Cary.
The meeting to answer questions about the proposal and make comments on the plan will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Morrisville Town Council Chambers at 100 Town Hall Drive. There will not be a formal presentation, but NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments. Written questions and comments can also be sent by Monday, March 21.
This project is still in the planning stages. The timetable calls for detailed designs to be ready by fall 2017, and the required environmental study completed by the following spring. A public hearing to present those design details would take place in the summer of 2018. Right of way acquisition could begin in fiscal year 2020-21, and construction in 2022-23.
