Race Events Expected to Bring Increased Traffic to Charlotte This Week

Charlotte - The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing for race events at Charlotte Motor Speedway that will generate increased traffic in southwest Cabarrus County and northeast Mecklenburg County on Thursday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 9. The heaviest traffic is expected on Interstate 85, U.S. 29, N.C. 49 and Bruton Smith Boulevard.

The department will use overhead message signs and portable message signs to alert motorists of problem areas and suggested alternate routes around incidents and congestion. The department also advises motorists to check for real-time traffic information by calling 511, visiting the Traveler Services section of the department's website or following @NCDOT on Twitter. To access NCDOT Mobile, a version of the department's website especially for mobile services, visit m.ncdot.gov from your mobile browser.

The following are suggested routes for motorists to get to the speedway:

  • For motorists traveling from South Carolina, take I-77 North to the outer loop ofI-485 (Exit 1B) to I-85 North (Exit 30) to Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49); alternatively, motorists can continue on I-85 North to George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) and turn right onto U.S. 29 South;
  • For motorists traveling from west of Charlotte, take the inner loop of I-485 to I-85 North (Exit 30) to Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49); alternatively, motorists can continue on I-85 North to George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) and turn right onto U.S. 29 South;
  • For motorists traveling from east of Charlotte, take the outer loop of I-485to I-85 North (Exit 30) to Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49); alternatively, motorists can continue on I-85 North to George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) and turn right onto U.S. 29 South; and
  • For motorists traveling from north of Charlotte, take I-85 South to George Liles Parkway (Exit 54) to U.S. 29 South.

Commuters who use I-85 can expect delays Friday afternoon, Oct. 7, and should adjust driving time when possible or use an alternate route. Through traffic on I-85 North should remain in the left two lanes from I-485 to Poplar Tent Road.

Motorists who do not need to travel near the speedway during race events are asked to avoid the area. After race events, all traffic will be directed away from the speedway. Motorists are encouraged to plan where to park before arriving.
