Road Closures for Railroad Crossing Work in Union County

Charlotte - Crews with CSX and the N.C. Department of Transportation will implement a series of temporary road closures in Union County to improve four railroad crossings beginning Monday, Oct. 10, at 9 a.m. All work should be completed by Friday, Oct. 14, but adverse weather or delayed delivery of asphalt may extend the work into the week of Monday, Oct. 17.

In addition, the railroad crossing at Elizabethan Road will close permanently. As of Tuesday, Oct. 11, drivers will no longer be able to travel between N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway) and New Town Road on Elizabethan Road.

The first temporary closure will occur at North Johnson Street between Icemorlee Street and West Jackson Street in Monroe. Signs will restrict access to local traffic only and direct drivers to use North Charlotte Avenue as a detour. On Monday, CSX will perform its work; on Tuesday, the department will repave the crossing. North Johnson Street should reopen to traffic Wednesday morning.

The second temporary closure will occur at New Town Road between N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway) and South Rocky River Road just outside of Monroe. Signs will restrict access to local traffic only and direct drivers to use N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway) as a detour. On Tuesday, CSX will perform its work; on Wednesday, the department will repave the crossing. New Town Road should reopen to traffic Thursday morning.

The third temporary closure will occur at Fletcher Broome Road between N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway) and New Town Road in Union County. Signs will restrict access to local traffic only and direct drivers to use South Rocky River Road as a detour. On Wednesday, CSX will perform its work; on Thursday, the department will repave the crossing. Fletcher Broome Road should reopen to traffic Friday morning.

The fourth temporary closure will occur at Rehobeth Road between West North Main Street and West South Main Street in Waxhaw. Signs will direct drivers to use Church Street as a detour. On Thursday, CSX will perform its work; on Friday, the department will repave the crossing. Rehobeth Road should reopen to traffic Saturday morning.

The department reminds motorists to stay alert, slow down and use extra caution when traveling through a work zone.
