Roadway Washout Means I-95 Traffic Shift Starts Thursday Near Johnston-Harnett County Line

Raleigh - Hurricane Matthew caused a washout on I-95 south of Benson near Mile Marker 78 close to the Johnston Harnett County line.

N.C. Department of Transportation crews will install temporary pavement in the median on the southbound side of I-95 to allow southbound lane shift to maintain one lane of traffic in the southbound direction. This will cause a short-term (approximately 1 day) detour for I-95 southbound traffic through the town of Benson.

Starting Thursday night, the short term detour sends drivers to I-40 West to N.C. 242 toward Benson to U.S. 301 to Hodges Chapel Road and back to I-95.

Once the traffic shift on I-95 is installed, the short term detour through Benson will end and traffic will be placed in the one lane southbound traffic shift configuration to begin the work to repair the washout. This work is anticipated to take approximately one week to complete.
