Raleigh - The Durham intersection of Carver Street and Broad Street/Kenan Road will be closing for 45 days, starting Monday, March 21, for the construction of a roundabout at that location. The change is being made to improve safety at the intersection in order to reduce the potential for accidents.
Work on the $293,948 project by contractor Carolina Sunrock, LLC is expected to wrap up the first week of May. A signed detour route will put traffic on Stadium Drive and Duke Street (U.S. 501) to get around the closure.
NCDOT reminds motorists to use caution in the area, and watch for road closure and construction signs.
A roundabout is a circular intersection that channels traffic around a center island without using traffic signals, reducing the chance of accidents. Because roundabouts allow for continuous flow, vehicles pass through the intersection more efficiently than traditional intersections, reducing backups at the location.
