Greensboro - N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to begin replacing the Shatterly Road Bridge over a tributary of North Prong Stinking Quarter Creek, closing a portion of the roadway just north of Liberty, next month.
Work will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9. The new bridge should be open by May 2017.
Drivers will be able to use a 1.8-mile detour along Spoon Road, N.C. 62 and Ferguson Road.
This project is part of the department's overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state's bridges. The 59-year-old existing bridge is functionally obsolete, and was built to design standards no longer used.
