Motorists will drive on new diverging diamond interchange
Charlotte - The Department of Transportation will be shifting traffic at the Interstate 40/U.S. 21 interchange in Statesville to a diverging diamond interchange on Saturday, Dec. 3, weather permitting.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, crews will remove paint markings under lane closures on U.S. 21. At 9 p.m., U.S. 21 will be closed underneath I-40 to paint pavement markings for the new traffic patterns. Crews will also be adjusting traffic signals and signs associated with the new pattern.
All work should be completed no later than 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. Law enforcement will be on site to monitor traffic flow through the interchange.
A diverging diamond allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the road and can move large volumes of traffic without increasing the number of lanes and traffic signals. A diverging diamond also provides easier access to an interstate. This visualization shows how traffic moves through the diverging diamond through each approach to the interchange.
