Charlotte - The Department of Transportation will implement several traffic shifts at the I-40/I-77 interchange in Statesville starting tonight, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18.
In conjunction with the traffic shifts, the following will take place:
Crews will permanently close the loop exit ramp from I-77 North to Exit 51B (I-40 West). All traffic on I-77 North will access I-40 East or West from Exit 51, no longer from Exit 51A-B. Motorists traveling from I-40 West to U.S. 21 will also use this exit.
Once traffic exits I-77, the ramp will split. Motorists traveling to I-40 East should remain to the right. Motorists traveling to I-40 West and U.S. 21 should remain to the left and follow the new loop ramp back under I-77 into new collector lanes that will merge to I-40 West. Access to U.S. 21 will be to the right. This will be the permanent exit point from I-77 North to I-40.
Traffic on I-77 South traveling to I-40 West and U.S. 21 will use Exit 51B. At the bottom of the exit ramp, traffic will continue straight to merge to I-40 West, or keep right to get to U.S. 21. The current detour along I-77 South, I-40 East and Old Mocksville Road will be removed.
Traffic on I-40 West traveling to U.S. 21 will continue to utilize Exit 152B. On the exit ramp, motorists traveling to I-77 North will bear right. Motorists traveling to U.S. 21 will bear left and continue along the new loop ramp.
This shift will temporarily place I-40 West traffic on a collector road until the permanent westbound lanes are completed.
NCDOT will utilize overhead message boards on I-77 North near mile marker 49 to give advanced notice to motorists.
