Raleigh - Work on the Alston Avenue (N.C. 55) widening project in Durham will require some additional weekend closures this month. Crews need more time to remove asbestos from two railroad bridges above the road.
The added work will require the closure of Alston Avenue between the Durham Freeway and Main Street between 10 p.m. on Friday, March 17, and 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20, and again during the same time period from Friday, March 24 until Monday morning, March 27.
Local traffic and driveway access will be kept open during the work, but there will be detours in place:
Eastbound Alston Avenue (N.C. 55) - Turn right onto Main Street. Turn left onto Fayetteville Street.Turn left onto southbound Durham Freeway. Turn off onto Exit 11 (Alston Avenue) and turn right to continue east.
Westbound Alston Avenue (N.C. 55) -Merge right onto northbound Durham Freeway.Turn off onto Exit 12A (Fayetteville Street). Turn right onto Fayetteville Street.Turn right onto Main Street. Turn left at Alston Avenue to continue west.
Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling in the area for their safety as well as the construction crews. Motorists need to anticipate possible delays and pay close attention to detour signs.
The Alston Avenue project calls for widening and other improvements for more than a mile and is intended to reduce congestion and improve safety along the road. The work will include sidewalks on both sides of the road and either wider outside lanes to accommodate bicycles or designated bike lanes. There will also be retaining walls, railroad track work and new railroad bridges.
The project is scheduled to wrap up in late 2019.
