With the potential for of snow accumulation Friday evening and the ground already being cold, the conditions are appropriate for pretreatment today. NCDOT staff across Division 9, which encompasses Stokes, Forsyth, Davidson, Davie and Rowan counties have begun anti-icing treatments with brine on some of the region's interstates, bridges and overpasses, and will continue through the day tomorrow. We will update the public detailing our plan through the weekend.
NCDOT proactively treats bridges and overpasses in advance of a winter storm because those elevated structures freeze first during periods of cold and inclement weather. Non-elevated road shave some insulation from the ground, which delays freezing.
Additional information about severe weather and safety tips for motorists is available on NCDOT's website. For real-time travel information, visit DriveNC.gov or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
