Lillington - Three new bridges are on the way in Harnett County.
T.A. Loving Co. of Goldsboro received a $3.5 million contract to replace these bridges on:
Kivett Road over East Buies Creek, built in 1955;
Three Bridge Road over Black River, built in 1957; and
Three Bridge Road over Black River Overflow, built in 1957.
Although they have remained safe, the three bridges are functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means they have high maintenance costs, vehicle weight limits and outdated designs.
The contractor can begin work Aug. 28 and has until June 30, 2018, to finish.
This was one of 16 highway and bridge project contracts recently awarded by NCDOT. They were worth about $204.5 million, which was more than $13 million under estimates.
