Asheville - Lane changes are coming to Interstate 26.
A contractor for the Department of Transportation will begin shifting westbound I-26 traffic just south of the I-40/240 Interchange on the bridge over Pond Road into a new pattern.
GLF Construction is working at night to alter the westbound lanes from the existing pattern which has been in use for more than a year. Crews are moving temporary concrete medians to shift traffic into lanes on the new bridge. Additional alterations are scheduled for this spring, including the shift to the permanent pattern.
Motorists driving into Asheville will experience the new pattern during their morning commutes this week.
Signs have been posted to alert drivers of the upcoming alterations, and that the maximum speed limit will remain 55 miles per hour.
Motorists should prepare for the change by slowing down prior to the work zone, increasing their concentration, obeying all traffic signs, and watching for contractors in the work zone.
