New fees to support growing regional transportation needs
Raleigh - Since July 1, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has been collecting a new fee to support the Triangle's growing regional transportation needs. Another fee will be added to Wake County annual vehicle license plate and registration fees on August 1.
On July 1, a new $7 county vehicle registration tax was added to registration fees to support the county public transportation system. The new tax was added to vehicles registered or renewed in the county on or after that date.
The fee is due on private passenger vehicles, private motorcycles, U-Drive-It passenger vehicles, limousine vehicles, common carriers, contract carriers, exempt for-hire passenger carrier vehicles, property hauling (farm) vehicles, manufacturers and motor vehicle dealers.
Also, beginning August 1, an additional $3 will be added to the Triangle's existing Regional Transportation Authority tax, bringing that tax to $8. This fee will also be payable with the vehicle's annual registration payment.
Combined, the new fees will add $15 to annual vehicle registration totals.
