Crews work on replacing the Sunset Avenue bridge over U.S. 301 in Rocky Mount
ROCKY MOUNT – A project that includes replacing the Sunset Avenue overpass in Rocky Mount will require traffic to be diverted off Wesleyan Boulevard this coming weekend.
To safely install the new steel bridge girders, a state Transportation of Department contractor needs to close the boulevard (U.S. 301) at Sunset Avenue, beginning at 3 a.m. Saturday. The contractor plans to finish the installation and reopen the boulevard to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, June 18.
The following detours will be used:
- For northbound Wesleyan Boulevard traffic, turn right onto May Drive, then left onto Sunset Avenue (U.S. 64 Business), then take the U.S. 301 Northbound on-ramp.
- For southbound boulevard traffic, take the off-ramp exit at Sunset Avenue, go across the interchange and re-enter the boulevard using the on-ramp.
NCDOT last year awarded a $28 million contract to PLT Construction of Wilson to add a travel lane in each direction to a two-mile segment of Wesleyan Boulevard between May Drive and Benvenue Road, next to the Golden East Crossing mall.
As part of the project, the contractor is
replacing the Sunset Avenue bridge, which was closed last fall. The new bridge is expected to open by early next year.
