Bridge Rehabilitation Work Requires Temporary Nightly Closures of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge

No closures over July 4 Holiday

WILMINGTON--Motorists who travel on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge (U.S. 76/421) over the Northeast Cape Fear River in New Hanover County need to be aware that the bridge will be closed nightly Sunday through Thursday next week and part of the following week.

The closure is needed so a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation can safely repair mechanical components of the bridge.

The nightly closures will start Sunday, June 24 and will be in effect from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.  The bridge will not be closed on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as the night of the 3rd and 4th to accommodate July 4 holiday traffic. The bridge will be completely closed again on Thursday night, July 5. A signed detour will be in place during the complete closure.

Work on the bridge will continue through the summer but will only require intermittent nightly lane closures in each direction. These lane closures will begin on Friday, July 6, and continue until August 31. They will be in place from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night. At least one lane will remain open to traffic in each direction.

Motorists are urged to slow down and pay extra attention for their own safety as well as the safety of workers and other motorists when traveling across the bridge.  Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
