MOCKSVILLE — Work is under way on a new roundabout on
Farmington Road at the top of the ramps for eastbound Interstate 40 (exit 174),
east of Mocksville in Davie County.
With additional traffic anticipated
as a result of last year’s relocation of Davie County High School to just north
of the interstate, it was determined a roundabout would be the best option to
improve safety at the ramps, as well as to provide better traffic flow during
peak travel times.
Roundabouts have reduced collisions by as much as 50%
in some locations, as drivers must slow down to use them. Because all vehicles
are going in the same direction and enter the roundabout at an angle, they also
eliminate the possibility of head-on or T-bone type collisions. Unlike
intersections that use stop signs or stoplights, they also eliminate the
stop-and-go pattern that can lead to traffic backups.
Although there are
no lane closures for this phase of the project, drivers are urged to slow down
and use caution while going through the work zone.
The new roundabout is
expected to be open for use by early August.
