PITTSBORO – A smoother ride is
coming to stretches of four highways and 32 secondary roads in Chatham County.
The N.C.
Department of Transportation recently awarded a $10.8 million contract to S.T.
Wooten Corp. of Wilson for the work. The following major routes will be
repaved:
• U.S.
64 between Farrington Road and the Haw River bridge, but excluding the Jordan
Lake bridges;
• U.S. 421 between U.S. 64 and Carter Brooks Road, or a distance of
3.3 miles;
• N.C. 87 between U.S. 64 Business and U.S. 15/501; and
• N.C. 902 between N.C. 87 and U.S. 421.
In addition, 32
sections of secondary roads in Chatham County will be resurfaced, totaling 68
miles of roadway.
The work will
include milling away the deteriorating asphalt, resurfacing the roadway and
reconstructing the shoulders. The work is necessary to improve the pavement and
make the road safer.
Work can begin after
July 30, and S.T. Wooten has until October 2019 to complete the projects.
This was one of 25 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by NCDOT. Per
state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The
contracts are worth nearly $630 million.
