Litter is not only unsightly, but it adversely impacts our State in many ways, including economically, aesthetically, and environmentally. Litter affects the quality of our life. We have to pay millions to clean it up. Litter along our roadways can also negatively impact tourism and the way people perceive our State when they are traveling through it. Litter also washes off our roadsides into our storm drainage systems and ultimately pollutes our streams, lakes, rivers, and ocean waters.
N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) utilizes several litter programs to address the problem of cleaning up litter on our roadways. NCDOT’s Roadside Environmental Unit manages the following litter programs, which include partnerships with other agencies, business groups, individuals, volunteer groups, and contractors.
