is underway in Charlotte on the first phase of a locomotive and passenger
railcar maintenance facility that will replace the current maintenance facility
next to the Norfolk Southern Charlotte Yard – northeast of uptown.
When complete, the project, southwest of uptown, will have several benefits, including:
- Close proximity to Charlotte Gateway Station
- Providing capacity to support the development of future passenger service on the federally designated Southeast High-Speed Rail corridor
- Improving the safety and efficiency of the maintenance of existing and future intercity passenger trains in the Charlotte area
The project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program to improve passenger and freight railroad operations along the Piedmont Corridor from Raleigh to Charlotte.
