Project Overview and Purpose

Construction is underway in Charlotte on the first phase of a locomotive and passenger railcar maintenance facility that will replace the current maintenance facility next to the Norfolk Southern Charlotte Yard – northeast of uptown.

When complete, the project, southwest of uptown, will have several benefits, including:

  • Close proximity to Charlotte Gateway Station
  • Providing capacity to support the development of future passenger service on the federally designated Southeast High-Speed Rail corridor
  • Improving the safety and efficiency of the maintenance of existing and future intercity passenger trains in the Charlotte area

The project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program to improve passenger and freight railroad operations along the Piedmont Corridor from Raleigh to Charlotte.

Project Highlights

The project is divided into phases.

Plans for, Phase IA, currently under construction, include two layover and servicing tracks of 1,300 and 1,000 feet as well as a 600-foot-long service platform, a 475-foot-long track for spare equipment and a 6,200-square-foot building for maintenance personnel and Amtrak crews.

Phase 1A also includes track work to be performed by Norfolk Southern to allow passenger trains to access the facility from the Norfolk Southern mainline.

Additional phases are planned although they are not currently funded:

  • Phase 1B will include a 40,000-square-foot shop building and additional yard tracks.
  • Phase 2 will include a building expansion to accommodate longer, high-speed trains.

Resources for Local Property Owners

In many cases, it is inevitable that a certain amount of private property must be acquired. The displacement of homes and businesses is minimized to the extent practicable. The following brochures will answer questions about this process.
