Project Overview and Purpose

Work is completed on the reconstructed railroad tracks located south of the Linwood Railroad Yard and north of the bridge over the Yadkin River in Linwood.

The project's goal was to improve train speeds, increase train capacity and reliability and decrease travel time between Raleigh and Charlotte.

The Duke Curve track is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a series of improvements to the North Carolina Railroad corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte – one of the busiest railroad corridors – to increase railroad capacity, efficiency and safety.

Project Highlights

Work, which began in August 2013 and was completed in spring 2015, involved reconstructing the tracks on new alignments to improve curve speeds, geometry and alignment with the switches for Linwood Railroad Yard.
