US70 Gallants Bridge

Project Overview and Purpose

The N.C. Department of Transportation is replacing the existing bascule bridge on U.S. 70 over Gallants Channel in Beaufort with a 65-foot fixed-span bridge to help improve traffic in the area. Work also involves widening U.S. 70 to four lanes with a median on a new location, and building a bridge on Turner Street

The improvements will improve traffic flow on U.S. 70, which will eliminate traffic delays due to bridge openings.

The $66.4 million construction project, contracted to Conti Enterprises, Inc. of Edison, N.J., began March 25, 2014, and is scheduled for completion in early 2019.

Project Highlights

  • The existing drawbridge will be replaced on new alignment with a 65-foot high fixed-span bridge.
  • U.S. 70 is being rerouted from downtown Beaufort to a new location.
  • The existing culverts under Turner Street are being replaced with a bridge. Sidewalks along both sides of Turner Street will connect downtown Beaufort to the new U.S. Highway 70.

News and Updates

  • The channel span installation began June 1, 2016, reducing the channel's navigable height to 65 feet.
  • Turner Street was closed in June 2015, and work to replace the culvert pipes with a new bridge is in progress.
  • The final traffic pattern for the new alignment of U.S. 70 is expected to be in place by September 2017.
  • Removal of the old bascule drawbridge is expected to be complete by July 2018.
