The bypass goes through the Renston Rural Historic District, located southwest of Winterville. The design was modified in 2007 to lessen the impact on the district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The design changes included removing a proposed interchange at N.C. 903 and shifting the alignment of the bypass eastward.
