Poplar Tent Road Widening

Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to widen Poplar Tent Road – which connects I-85 and Concord Regional Airport with Concord – from two to four lanes.

For funding purposes, the project would be broken up into two sections:

  • Section A, which is funded, would start at Gable Oaks Lane/Woodhaven Place and end at George Liles Parkway
  • Section B, which is currently unfunded, would start at George Liles Parkway and end at Concord Parkway (U.S. 29-601 Bypass)

Due to continual growth and development in the area, Poplar Tent Road will not be able to accommodate anticipated future traffic volumes. Widening the road would improve traffic flow and safety.

Project Funding

This project is listed as Project U-3415 in the N.C. Department of Transportation's State Transportation Improvement Program and is funded for $130 million.

For funding purposes, the project is divided into two sections:

  • Section A – Gable Oaks Lane/Woodhaven Place to George Liles Parkway – $45.1 million (funded)
  • Section B – George Liles Parkway to Concord Parkway – $82.4 million (unfunded)
