Project Overview and Purpose
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to extend Rea Road 1.7 miles east from N.C. 16 (Providence Road) to N.C. 84 (Weddington Road) near Twelve Mile Creek Road in Weddington. Proposed work also involves widening 2.7 miles of the existing N.C. 84 from two to four lanes from Twelve Mile Creek Road to Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road in Wesley Chapel.
Proposed work would help improve the mobility and connectivity of N.C. 84 in Union County.
Currently, vehicles traveling west on N.C. 84 to Rea Road must follow an indirect route. Westbound traffic on N.C. 84 must turn left onto N.C. 16, travel approximately three-quarters of a mile and then turn right onto Rea Road.
Without improvement, traffic volumes in 2035 are also expected to exceed capacity on N.C. 84 in the project area.
The preferred design option - referred to as the preferred alternative – for Rea Road Extension, is detailed in the following maps:
The preferred alternative involves building a four-lane boulevard-type road with 12-foot inside travel lanes, 14-foot outside lanes (to accommodate bicycles), a 23-foot raised grass median as well as curb and gutter.
As part of the proposed project, NCDOT will also coordinate with local municipalities to consider including sidewalks. Rea Road Extension would be a four-lane divided roadway and signed as N.C. 84. The anticipated posted speed limit is 45 mph.
Preferred Alternative Considered
On July 18, 2016, the N.C. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration selected the preferred alternative, which is a combination of two previous design options. The combined option provides a better geometric design and avoids dividing several properties.
The alternative also minimizes impacts to the Wesley Chapel-Weddington Athletic Association park property by shifting the alignment to the south in the vicinity of Dogwood Park.
Environmental Assessment Approved
NCDOT and the Federal Highway Administration approved the Environmental Assessment – which looks at how the project might impact the community and natural environment– in May 2015.
NCDOT is seeking public comments on the project until July 24, 2017.

The NCDOT project team will review all feedback – regardless of how it is submitted – and explore options to incorporate and address concerns where and when feasible. NCDOT will continue to develop the project and present its progress at a later date.
NCDOT held a public meeting June 20, 2017, in Matthews to answer questions and receive comments from the public on the proposed project.
