Throughout his career, Robert D. Teer Jr. has focused on transportation and economic development in the United States and overseas and has been involved with both vertical and horizontal construction.
He served on the board of directors for the Durham & Southern Railroad and then worked for Nello L. Teer Co. in Durham, building thousands of miles of highway including parts of the West Virginia, Maine, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts turnpikes.
Teer was also president of Teer Enterprises, a family real estate development company, and in 1986, he started Teer Associates. He has been involved with more than 3.7 million square feet of various real estate products.
Teer has served on many civic, private and nonprofit boards. Among them, he has been a member of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority since 1998, serving in various capacities including chairman. He has also served on the UNC-TV Board of Trustees, as chair of the SunTrust Bank Board for Eastern North Carolina and as the at-large director of the USO of North Carolina since 2004.
A native of Durham, Teer holds a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and graduate certificates from the University of North Carolina and the University of Tennessee. He also served in the United States Army Reserve for 28 years before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
His term on the N.C. Turnpike Authority Board of Directors runs from 2015 to 2019.
