​Operations & Facilities

The Rail Division's Operations & Facilities branch is primarily responsible for the N.C. Department of Transportation's intercity passenger rail program, including the locomotives, railcars and stations associated with operating those daily passenger services. The branch also manages and maintains NCDOT-owned rail properties as well as more than 100 miles of preserved rail corridors in North Carolina.

Planning & Development

The Planning & Development branch oversees strategic rail initiatives, project development, freight planning and railroad coordination.

Business Office

Responsible for the financial management of the Rail Division, the business office monitors grants as well as the day-to-day accounts payable and account receivables.

Design & Construction

The Design & Construction branch is responsible for the project management, engineering design and review, and construction management of railroad projects and programs statewide. The branch also oversees freight and passenger rail projects – including new tracks, signals, yards and terminals – and manages the statewide design and construction program for highway-railroad crossing signals.

Engineering Coordination & Safety

The Engineering Coordination & Safety branch is responsible for railroad crossing closures, corridor studies, data analysis and inventory, surfaces and encroachments, state safety oversight and BeRailSafe.

NC By Train

NC By Train is the Rail Division's passenger train service, which offers daily service on two routes within North Carolina. The Piedmont train makes stops six times daily at nine cities between Raleigh and Charlotte, while the Carolinian train stops twice daily in a dozen North Carolina cities on its way to and from New York City.
