​The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle's duplicate driver license and ID card service allows individuals to purchase online a duplicate or replacement of the last N.C. driver license or ID card that was issued to them.

Note: Customers with a suspended driver license or an outstanding debt with NCDMV are not eligible to use this online service.

  • How is ordering a duplicate driver license or ID card online different from getting one at a driver license office?
    Ordering a duplicate driver license or ID card online is intended for customers who need to only change their address or order a replacement card.

    If you go to an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office, you can also update your class of license, add or change endorsements, take another photo and change any other personal information on your card.
  • Can I update my voter registration when ordering a replacement or duplicate license?
    ​No. For information on how to update your voter registration, visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.
  • Do I need a replacement card if my driver license or ID card is going to expire soon?
    ​If your driver license or ID card is going to expire within six months, you can go ahead and renew your license online or at an NCDMV driver license office​. If you decide to get the duplicate driver license or ID card, you will still be required to renew at the time it expires.
  • I'm concerned about my privacy and personal information. Will my driver license or ID card record information be shared with any third parties?
    ​Your privacy and security is the N.C. Department of Transportation's highest priority. NCDOT uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) software to encrypt all personal information and never stores your credit card information.

    The Federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act specifies that the personal information contained in your driver license or ID card record may not be released to anyone without your consent, except when it is a matter of public health or safety or when the individual or entity requesting such information is otherwise authorized to obtain it under federal law.
  • Can I order a duplicate of my learner permit or Level 1 graduated learner permit online?
    ​If you have a Level 1 graduated learner permit, you may request a duplicate permit online. You may request a duplicate of your classified or commercial learner permit online if it is valid.
  • Can I request a duplicate of my Level 2 graduated driver license online?
    ​If you have a Level 2 graduated driver license, you may request a duplicate driver license online.
  • Can I request a duplicate of my Level 3 graduated driver license online?
    ​If you have a Level 3 graduated driver license, you may request a duplicate driver license online. Once you turn 18, you may convert it to a regular driver license by visiting an NCDMV driver license office and paying a fee for an original license.
  • Can I change my driver license from a Class C (Graduated) to a Class C (Operator) through NCDMV Online Services?
    ​You must visit an NCDMV driver license office to change the class of your driver license or learner permit.
  • Can I request a duplicate driver license online after I pay my restoration/service fees?
    ​You cannot. Although you have paid the fees, your driver record still does not reflect an "active" status.
  • Can I request a duplicate driver license online if my most recent driver license was issued without a picture?
    ​You must visit an NCDMV driver license office to obtain a duplicate driver license.
  • Can I change my name on my driver license or ID card through NCDMV Online Services?
    ​No. You must go to an NCDMV driver license office​ with proof of the name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or document from the courts or Register of Deeds.
  • What if I receive my duplicate driver license or ID card and the information is not correct?
    ​If you discover a discrepancy, you should call the NCDMV Customer Contact Center at (919) 715-7000, visit an NCDMV driver license office or send a message.
  • What picture will appear on my duplicate driver license or ID card?
    ​The most recent, retrievable image of you that is on file with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will appear on your duplicate driver license or ID card. If you want a new picture, you must visit an NCDMV driver license office.
  • What address will be listed on my duplicate driver license or ID card?
    ​Your residential address will appear on the face of your duplicate driver license or ID card.
  • What should I do if I do not receive my duplicate driver license or ID card?
    ​If you do not receive your duplicate license or ID card within 20 business days, contact NCDMV or visit an NCDMV driver license office.
