Local Government Collaboration

Attendees at the 2024 N.C. Transportation Summit in Greensboro, N.C., engage in a session on navigating the competitive grants process.

The N.C. Department of Transportation plays a vital role in supporting local governments throughout the entire grant process, from project initiation to post-award implementation. By working together, NCDOT ensures local transportation projects align with community priorities and offers guidance as needed.

Letter of Support Requests

Local entities seeking a letter of support from NCDOT for a proposed grant application should complete this request form at least two weeks in advance to ensure the request can be accommodated. Please note that receipt of this letter does not guarantee funding for the project.

Once the request is submitted, it will go through the following steps:

  • The Division Engineer for the county will receive an email to review and provide concurrence on the project with a letter.
  • If the project involves specific modes (e.g., Rail, Bike/Ped, Transit), modes will also receive an email to review the project.
  • Once the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) have approved the project, a draft letter of support will be prepared. The draft will then undergo a review by NCDOT leadership.
  • Upon approval, the final letter will be sent for signature and returned to the requester.
