Workers are building a new interchange at Peters Creek Parkway

Parkway at Business 40 will close Saturday morning

WINSTON-SALEM – The N.C. Department of Transportation needs to temporarily close a portion of Peters Creek Parkway over Business 40 this weekend to continue constructing a new interchange.

Beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, crews will close the parkway in both directions between the overpass and First Street. Crews will also close all but one of the ramps at the parkway’s interchange with Business 40. The parkway will reopen at 5 a.m. Sunday with a new traffic pattern using part of the new Peters Creek Parkway bridge.

Parkway motorists headed north will detour onto West Academy Street, then left onto Broad Street, then left onto First Street. Drivers going the other direction will take Second Street, turn right onto Broad Street, then turn right onto West Academy Street to reach the parkway south of the interchange with Business 40.

The northbound parkway exit ramp to Business 40 East will remain open this weekend, so motorists can use this ramp as an alternate detour around the closed bridge.

This map shows the detours and ramp closures.

When the parkway reopens Sunday morning, motorists will begin using a new loop from eastbound Business 40 onto Peters Creek Parkway.

The existing parkway bridge needs to be demolished to finish constructing the interchange, which is part of the Business 40 Improvement Project. The department is building a 1.2-mile section of Business 40, which was opened in 1958 and has become outdated for modern traffic needs. The project, which is expected to be completed in 2020, will improve mobility and safety on this corridor.
