Bridge Work on Business 40 in Winston-Salem Requires Lane Closures

Inside lanes to be closed in both directions

WINSTON-SALEM – Drivers traveling on Business 40/U.S. 421 Salem Parkway should expect to encounter lane closures starting 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12.

The closures are need to allow an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor to safely perform bridge work on the inside lanes in both directions of Business 40, between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway, as part of the Peters Creek Parkway bridge project.  The closures will continue for about 20 days.

In addition to the inside lane closures, westbound Business 40, between Peters Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Avenue, will completely close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, weather permitting. As westbound Business 40 reopens at 6 a.m., only the outside lane will be available.

“In an effort to reduce the impact to daytime traffic, NCDOT has worked with the design-build team to complete preliminary nighttime work and allow the team full access to the westbound lanes at night,” said NCDOT resident engineer Mezak Tucker. “The continuous inside lane closures, originally scheduled to be completed over the course of 60 days, should be significantly reduced to approximately 20 days, thanks to these efforts.”

As a reminder to drivers, ongoing closures will continue to take place ahead of the full two-year closure starting this fall for the Business 40 Improvement Project.

Westbound traffic will be able to detour using Peters Creek Parkway, West 1st Street and Cloverdale Avenue.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert, slow down in the work zone and obey the posted speed limit.
