Broad Street Bridge Closing Thursday

WINSTON-SALEM – There are two road closings, a bridge demolition and new detours scheduled in downtown Winston-Salem beginning Thursday, Sept. 20.

The Broad Street bridge will be removed and is expected to re-open in Spring 2019. Its demolition will prompt the following weekend road closures:

  • Thursday, Sept. 20 – At 6 a.m., the Broad Street bridge will be closed.
  • Friday, Sept. 21 – At 7 p.m., the inside lanes of Business 40 that approach Broad Street, will be closed.
  • Friday, Sept. 21 – At 10 p.m., all of the lanes on Business 40, between Broad Street and Peters Creek Parkway, will be closed.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m., Business 40 will re-open.

During the bridge removal, the off-ramp from westbound Business 40 to Broad Street, and the on-ramp from Broad Street to eastbound Business 40, will remain open through the weekend. Once the demolition work is complete, the Broad Street ramps to and from Business 40 will be permanently closed.

When opened, the new bridge will not have direct access to Business 40.

Beginning Thursday, Sept. 21, the following detours will be utilized:

  • Getting around the bridge demolition:
  • Broad Street northbound traffic will take West Academy Street to Peters Creek Parkway, continuing onto Second Street, and back to Broad Street.
  • Broad Street southbound traffic will take West First Street to Peters Creek Parkway, to West Academy Street and back to Broad Street.
  • Getting around the closing of Business 40:
  • Business 40 westbound traffic will exit at Broad Street and take West First Street to Peters Creek Parkway and then get back onto Business 40.
  • Business 40 eastbound traffic will exit at Peters Creek Parkway and get onto Academy Street, to Broad Street and back onto Business 40.

Pedestrians, wishing to cross over Business 40, will follow the pedestrian detour signs on West First, South Green and Wachovia streets. During this detour, the Green Street pedestrian bridge will be re-opened to the public.

Detour information has been sent to residents and business owners located nearest the bridge. A telephone number has been established to help people who prefer to hear the message. The number is 336-747-7855.

“We were able to work with the contractor to change our schedule to allow for this bridge to be replaced first,” NCDOT Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker said. “That means it will open earlier than expected, allowing motorists easier access to downtown Winston-Salem.”

The bridge was built in 1955 and is one of nine bridges that will be replaced as part of the Business 40 Improvement Project.
