Proposed Project to Improve the N.C. 109/Interstate 40 Interchange

WINSTON-SALEM – Transportation officials are inviting the public to participate in a community meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25, regarding a proposal to improve the N.C. 109/Interstate 40 interchange in Forsyth County.

“Work includes converting the existing half diamond interchange at N.C. 109 to a full diamond interchange and removing the existing connector roads and interchange ramps at Clemmonsville Road,” said Division Engineer Pat Ivey. “With a traffic volume of well-over 103,000 vehicles per day, this is the heaviest traveled section of roadway in Forsyth County”.

The Winston-Salem Metropolitan Planning Organization (WSMPO) submitted the project, which is included in its Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) list, to NCDOT for funding consideration. Through the NCDOT Strategic Mobility Formula that prioritizes projects based on safety, congestion, benefit-cost and local priorities, it scored well enough to be funded in August 2017 with property acquisition scheduled to begin in 2020 and construction in 2022.

“The purpose of this project is to improve the safety and functionality of this section of I-40 by reducing driver conflict points,” said Division Nine Board Member Michael Wells, Sr.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First Waughtown Baptist Church, 838 Moravia Street in Winston-Salem.

NCDOT engineers and consultants will be on hand to gather comments on the proposed design. A map of the study area, environmental features and those designs will be presented. The maps can also be viewed on the NCDOT public meetings website.

Attendees, as well as area residents who can’t attend the meeting, also have the opportunity to submit written comments and questions via mail, email or phone until Wednesday, Oct. 24. Anyone desiring additional information or wanting to submit comments may contact Division 9 Project Engineer Connie James at 375 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC  27127, ckjames1@ncdot.gov, or 336-747-7800.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Frederick Haith, Planning Engineer via email at fdhaith1@ncdot.gov or by phone 336-747-7800 as early as possible so that arrangements can be made.
