SYLVA — A bridge built in 1938 over Middle Creek in Macon County on N.C. 106 will be replaced in the near future.
The N.C. Department of Transportation invites the public to a Nov. 29 meeting regarding the proposal to replace the bridge. The meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. at Scaly Mountain Fire & Rescue, 169 Hale Ridge Road, in Scaly Mountain.
The project will widen travel lanes to 12 feet with eight-foot shoulders on both sides of N.C. 106 and create a new entrance to Happy Hill Road. Traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge while the new bridge is being built.
The existing concrete bridge has poor components and is deteriorating. With its narrow lanes, the bridge also no longer meets the demands of traffic. N.C. 106, just south of the bridge, averaged of 2,900 vehicles per day in 2017.
NCDOT officials invite the public to the meeting to review and comment on the proposed replacement. Maps and other information are posted on the
NCDOT website. Comments may be submitted at the meeting, or by phone, mail or email until Dec. 13.
