Bridge Work in Johnston County Will Require I-95 Detours

MICRO – Overnight this week, motorists will need to detour off Interstate 95 in Johnston County to allow workers to safely set steel girders over the highway for a new bridge.

The department is replacing the Lizzie Mill Road bridge as part of $53.1 million project that began last year to do pavement improvements along the interstate between mile markers 100 and 107.

I-95 will close in both directions starting at 11 p.m. today and reopening at 5 a.m. Tuesday. The highway will close again in both directions from 11 p.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday. Here are the details:

  • Northbound will close at mile marker 97, detouring traffic onto U.S. 301 North and back to I-95 at exit 107.
  • Southbound will close at mile marker 102, detouring traffic onto U.S. 301 South and back to I-95 at exit 97.

Although both directions will close for safety, contract workers will set four girders only over the southbound lanes this week. They are expected to do the same for the northbound lanes sometime after Christmas when additional detours will be required.
