Updates on the Capital Boulevard Bridge Replacements in Raleigh

RALEIGH The Capital Boulevard bridge replacements project will reach another major milestone early Friday morning, as engineers plan to open the new Wade Avenue ramp-bridge for travel.

Between midnight and 5 a.m. Friday, crews will have progressed enough to open the new ramp for those looking to travel westward on Wade Avenue from northbound Capital Boulevard.

The old ramp bridge was closed in early October so crews could complete work tying in the new structure to the existing roads. The new ramp was built alongside the older structure so there was no need for a long-term detour route.

One long-term closure does remain in place as work continues on the new flyover ramp from eastbound Wade Avenue to northbound Capital Boulevard. That is expected to open in 2019.

Meanwhile, work that would have closed a small section of northbound and southbound Capital Boulevard traffic this weekend has been postponed by the forecasted heavy rain.

On a future weekend to be determined, contractors will close the inside lanes of Capital Boulevard in both directions under the new bridge to construct the median. A second closure will be needed on a weekend in January, shutting down the outside lane of southbound Capital Boulevard to install a manhole for new utilities.

Updated information on the project to replace the Wade Avenue ramp bridge, and the Capital Boulevard bridge over Peace Street is available through a variety of means, including the project website, as well as the NCDOT Triangle Twitter feed.
