Greenville—A portion of Old Church Road,
near N.C. 58, north of Cape Carteret, will be closed to traffic beginning
Wednesday, Jan. 10. The closure is needed so the N.C. Department of
Transportation can replace the bridge over Hadnot Creek.
The new bridge will replace a structure that was built in 1961 and
is functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means while it has
remained safe, it was in more constant need of repairs. It was also built to
standards no longer used. The new bridge will be able to carry commercial as
well as standard vehicles.
The road closure is anticipated to continue until late May, 2018.
Traffic will be detoured north to N.C. 58 and back to Old Church Road.
Transportation officials urge travelers to use caution on the
detour routes during the closure.
