Icy Conditions will Persist into Thursday
CHARLOTTE – A storm front is departing
the Metrolina region, leaving behind a blanket of snow and hazardous driving
conditions. N.C. Department of Transportation crews are continuing efforts to
clear interstates, primary and secondary roads of several inches of the white
stuff.
In Division 10 (Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Stanly and Union
counties), 147 pieces of equipment and 61 contract trucks are being used to
clear roadways. Crews have placed more than 80,000 gallons of brine and 450 tons
of salt to treat roads so far.
In Division 12 (Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell and
Lincoln counties), 142 employees are using 110 pieces of equipment and 67
contract trucks to clear roadways, using 92,000 gallons of brine and 894 tons of
salt to help with clearing operations.
Driving conditions overnight and Thursday morning will be
hazardous, as slush remaining on the roads will freeze over. Maintenance yards
will have crews on standby to handle calls for assistance, resuming operations
tomorrow morning. Officials encourage residents to stay home if possible, and to
use extreme caution if driving is necessary.
