Kinston - Craven, Jones and Lenoir County
residents are encouraged to provide comment on the Kinston Bypass
Project as it moves into the Environmental Impact Statement phase. It is a
proposed 21-to-25-mile four-lane, median-divided freeway in Lenoir County and in
the western portions of Craven and Jones counties.
“This is a very important time in the life of the project,” said
NCDOT Division Engineer Preston Hunter. “People’s opinions are crucial in
determining how the project is shaped and whether we move forward at all.”
The project’s website has been updated to reflect the latest
proposal changes, including a revised schedule, videos, upcoming opportunities
for public involvement, and a public survey. The website also has an interactive
map where residents can evaluate the 12 bypass routes now under
consideration.
The project alternatives now being explored include; upgrading U.S.
70 on its current path, creating a new bypass route south of the existing route,
or even not making any changes at all, which is referred to as “no build.”
Area residents are encouraged to view a video that depicts the alternatives being considered and the benefits of the project. People can also participate in the
process by taking a survey.
Once complete, the Kinston Bypass would reduce traffic congestion
and delays along U.S. 70 between LaGrange and Dover. The bypass would also
improve regional mobility and connectivity.
Public comments can be submitted through the website, by writing a
letter or by calling the project hotline at 800-203-6315. Letters should be sent
