Lane Closures on I-277 Continue; I-277 Ramp Closure Also This Weekend

CHARLOTTE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will continue work this weekend on a $16.3 million project to improve 22 bridges along I-277.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, crews will remove barriers that have been in place to work on bridges over Elizabeth Avenue, Third Street and Fourth Street. The barriers will be moved to focus on bridges on the Inner Loop over Third, Stonewall and McDowell streets.

The barriers will be in place around the clock so workers can safely perform concrete pavement repairs and place epoxy overlays on the bridge decks. The work should be completed in time for next month’s NBA All-Star activities in Uptown.

One lane will be open during this time, so drivers should prepare for delays, slow down and use caution.

Weather permitting, a separate project will require closing the ramp from the I-277 Inner Loop to Freedom Drive (exit 1A) from 11 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21. Contract crews will perform full depth concrete pavement repairs during the closure.

Motorists can stay on I-277, exiting at Wilkinson Boulevard, then turning right on Morehead Street to return to Freedom Drive.
