Construction to Improve Traffic Flow, Safety Set to Begin This Month

SNEADS FERRY - After selecting a North Carolina contractor earlier this year, construction to improve an Onslow County road will begin this month.

The contractor, Wells Brothers Construction Company, Inc., of Turkey, NC, will begin work on Sneads Ferry Road on Feb. 18. Crews will widen 2.7 miles of the road between N.C. 210 and the bridge at the back gate of Camp Lejeune. The project includes adding a center lane, which will improve traffic flow and safety.

The roadway portion of the project is expected to wrap up in May 2021, with additional vegetation work continuing until late that year.

During the construction, there will be shoulder and single lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, crews will work some weekday nights, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., to work lane and shoulder closures.

There will not be a detour, but drivers are urged to seek an alternate route as they should anticipate additional congestion in the area. If drivers travel this portion of Sneads Ferry Road during construction times, they need to be alert to crews working.
