HOPE MILLS – State transportation officials are soliciting public feedback this month on a proposal to widen a 1.2-mile section of South Main Street (N.C. 59) into a four-lane roadway with a raised median.
The request to improve the road between Betsy Ross Drive and Parkton Road came from the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, which includes locally elected officials who prioritize road projects.
The informal open house will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Covenant Original Free Will Baptist Church at 813 Orchard St. People may drop in at any time to look at the preliminary design and submit comments about the proposal.
More information will be added to this NCDOT website when it becomes.
Comments collected by March 12 will be considered when finalizing the design.
The road primarily has two lanes now. Widening it with a median would improve traffic flow and safety and plan for anticipated growth in traffic volumes.
As part of the proposal, roundabouts would be built at Porter Road and Jefferson Street. Roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections, because drivers must slow down going through them, and the number of potential crash conflicts is greatly reduced.
