SYLVA — A proposed safety project on N.C. 9 in Polk County includes a new turn lane into Polk Central Elementary School, wider travel lanes and six-foot wide paved shoulders.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking public opinion on the proposed project and will hold a meeting from 4-7 p.m. on April 23 at the elementary school, 2141 N.C. 9 in Mill Spring.
Enhanced safety and improved traffic flow for motorists would be the benefits of this project, which runs between N.C. 108 and U.S. 74. This section of highway currently consists of 10-foot wide lanes with little or no shoulder. The project adds the new turn lane, 12-foot-wide lanes for vehicles and six-foot wide paved shoulders. The project would create safer access to agricultural and residential land uses — as well as the school — along N.C. 9.
Project team members will be available to discuss the concepts, answer questions and receive feedback at the meeting.
Maps and additional information will be posted on the NCDOT
public meeting website as they become available. All comments will be considered as the project plans develop, and should be submitted by May 7.
