CONCORD – Contract crews working on the Interstate 85 widening project in Cabarrus County will close Stewart Street at Tremont Avenue next week to convert the existing intersection to a roundabout.
The closure will be in place at 7 a.m. Monday, June 17, ending by August 16. During construction, traffic will be detoured from Stewart Street to Winecoff School Road and South Main Street (U.S. 29A).
Roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections and they eliminate the stop-and-go nature of an all-way stop. A recent study showed a 46 percent reduction in crashes, compared with the traditional intersections they replaced. They also improve traffic flow as drivers won’t have to wait at a traffic light.
Motorists are encouraged to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, follow posted detours, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
